Reading Your Water Meter
There are 8 odometer wheels on a standard 3/4 inch residential meter
head. The diagram below shows the values the wheels represent on
the meter head, or register. On larger meters such as the
commercial meter on the right, the wheels represent different untis of
measure.
The sewer and water bills that the District mails out, includes a
"start" reading and "end" reading.

Using Your Water Meter to Check for Leaks
There is also a very sensitive red dial on the meter register as shown
below. This dial turns with every 1/100th of a gallon that
flows through the meter. A simplw way to check for leaks in
the house is to shut all water faucets off and then watch the red
dial. If it turns, then water is leaking somewhere in the
house. The most come water leaks are found in toilets
where the flapper valve isn't make a tight seal. Another
common problem during the summer months are leaks in a outside
irrigation system.
