2009 BOARD ELECTION PROFILES

Jeff Daniels   Bill Shropshire   Betsey Weltner

JEFFREY A. DANIELS
100 Beaverhead Trail
PO Box 160609
Big Sky, MT 59716

Ownership Interest: Owner of commercial property, Medical Clinic of Big Sky, within the District.

Occupation: Physician

Personal Profile: I have lived and worked in Big Sky for 16 years. I know most of the residents of Big Sky and feel that I have a good understanding of the needs of our community. I have served on the Sewer District Board since 2005 and on the Volunteer Fire Department. I am currently the medical director for Big Sky Search and Rescue. My medical clinic is located within the sewer district in the Town Center area of the Meadow Village.

Position Statement: The growth of Big Sky is important to many of us, but we have to understand that there is a limit to how fast and wide we can grow. We have to understand the limits of our infrastructure. We have to understand the wide range of factors that contribute to our thriving community, and plan to do things right, the first time, in order to insure Big Sky’s success. I promise to dedicate myself to those goals.

Description of Business Relationships & Ownerships in Big Sky: Most people know that I was the first doctor to establish a practice in this community, and have been providing care since 1994. My wife, Evie, and I have dedicated ourselves to serve this community and will continue to do so.

BILL SHROPSHIRE
1519 Hinman Ave, Apt 2N
Evanston, IL 60201

Ownership Interest:
Owner of residential property in Sweetgrass Hills.

Occupation:  I am a Metallurgical Engineer by education and have worked in that industry since 1961.  I have been employed by American Chemet Corporation as its president since 1976.  We manufacture and market powdered metal products at our East Helena, Montana, plant. Prior to joining American Chemet I served in the US Army and worked for International Nickel Company.

Personal Profile:  I have been a member of the Big Sky Water & Sewer Board for eight years.  I have enjoyed the challenge of its work.  Although not a full time resident of Big Sky, I have attended over 75% of the meetings during my two terms either in person or by telephone.

I am a member of the Boards of Directors at American Chemet, Carus Chemicals Corporation and Magneco/Metrel and am Chairman of the Board at Peninsula Copper Industries.  I serve on the Advisory Board for Materials Engineering at Purdue University and for Civil Engineering at Carroll College. I also serve as a Materials Engineering Program Evaluator for ABET’s Engineering Accreditation Commission.  Purdue named me a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus in 2000.

Position Statement:  I believe the Water & Sewer District has done an outstanding job in providing increased sewage treatment and water storage to support Big Sky’s growth well into the future.  During the past four years it initiated and completed a major capital project aimed at increasing water availability to the Meadow Village by the integration of all four water systems within the district. Radio telemetry was installed on the mountain system to allow the District to move water around the Mountain Village and deliver it through a new Mountain to Meadow pipeline to systems in the district’s lower elevations as needed. Additionally, two new wells have been proven and drilled in the Meadow system and are now awaiting state approval. New water service lines and mains have been installed at Silver Bow and Hidden Village and the clarity problem which had been an issue at Aspen Groves has been eliminated. The major issues now confronting the District are to insure appropriate use of vacant district land sought by other Big Sky agencies and utilities, participate in the work of the Blue Water Initiative, and complete the work required to improve the appearance of its facilities by installing rock liners on ponds 1 and 3.  I’m dedicated to seeing these efforts through to conclusion.

Description of Business Relationships & Ownerships in Big Sky:  My wife and I have been property owners in Big Sky since 1981.  We currently have a house in Sweetgrass Hills which we built in 1997.   We are part time residents and have no business interests, or relationships, at Big Sky.  We are committed to Big Sky and its future and want to continue to work for its sustainable development.

Position Statement:  The Big Sky County Water & Sewer District is a key utility with the potential to make Big Sky an even better place in which to live, work and visit. The District’s Board should reflect the DIVERSITY, CREATIVITY, ENTHUSIASM and innovative spirit of the people in this community. It needs to do more than set rates and manage the status quo. It needs to envision the quality future Big Sky residents and visitors deserve, and begin to work TODAY to achieve that vision – by engaging the ideas and expertise of Big Sky’s people. This means taking on some tough issues such as water conservation and revisiting the boundaries of the District. It’s the right thing to do and the time to do it.

The Board should be working aggressively NOW to involve the community in long-term PLANNING to anticipate and deal with future challenges related to growth and resources.

Our community needs and deserves LEADERSHIP in important areas such as water conservation and the future direction of our District. The Board should work with the community to develop and promote voluntary water conservation guidelines.

ALIGNMENT and COOPERATION with zoning and planning and other community organizations and businesses should be driven by the Board. We all share the same goal: a better Big Sky for businesses, families, full-time residents and visitors.

COST EFFICIENCIES should be identified and adopted during this time of belt-tightening.

Better COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE PUBLIC should be a priority, through publicized meetings and planning sessions and enhanced web-based communications.
